VIVA EUROPA 2012: IL TROVATORE by Giuseppe VerdiVerdi's IL TROVATORE, performed on 22 June 2012 at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, was the opera set to be broadcast for the VIVA EUROPA 2012 event. Regrettably, due to financial uncertainties linked to the economic crisis, this year the broadcast could not be carried out. It was sung by Sebastian Catana, María Agresta, Ekaterina Smenchuk, Jorge de León and Liang Li, and conducted by maestro Zubin Mehta. IL TROVATORE, together with La Traviata and Rigoletto, make up the trilogy of Giuseppe Verdi’s most popular operas. VIVA EUROPA 2010: CARMEN by Georges BizetBizet’s CARMEN was the opera broadcast in the 2010 edition of VIVA EUROPA. It was performed at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia on 18 June 2010, and broadcast simultaneously in 43 European cities. It was sung by Elïna Garanča, Marcelo Álvarez, Paulo Szot, Silvia Vázquez, Favio Previati, Vicenç Esteve, Marina Rebeka, Adriana Zabala and Mario Cassi and was conducted by maestro Zubin Mehta. The action takes place in Seville in the early nineteenth century and tells the story of Carmen, a young beautiful gipsy who works in a cigar factory. She is the archetype of the independent and seductive woman, irresistible to any man. |

VIVA EUROPA 2009: DIE WALKÜRE by Richard WagnerWith its spectacular production by La Fura dels Baus, DIE WALKÜRE by Richard Wagner was performed on 24 June 2009 at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain, and broadcast to 9 participating cities across Europe. It was conducted by maestro Zubin Mehta and sung by Plácido Domingo, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Stephen Milling, Juha Uusitalo, Jennifer Wilson and Anna Larsson. As the plot unfolds, with its mythological characters and tales of gods, mortals, twins, incest and magical swords, it is rendered epic and moving by its breathtaking score. Together with Das Rheingold, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, it is part of the wagnerian quatrilogy Der Ring des Nibelungen. Leitmotifs, associated to some of the characters or themes, are repeated throughout the four operas making them a coherent whole. |
